Funny, but losses impact when you are aware that the archie story is more like a ‘what if’ tale.

I don’t get how this loses impact when you are aware that the archie story is a “what if” storyline, the punchline is more about the hamburger joke than mephisto.

BRILLIANT!
it’s obvious that this is more of a rip on the spiderman one more day storyline. not really a what if tale at all as this is pretty much want happened in that story. accept for peter parker not being able to act as much as an adult as archie did here.

and the ending here is way better than one more day too! great stuff guys!

Jamie, it looks to me like a big part of the strip is trying to convey the point that there are some long time followers of Spiderman that view the whole OMD/BND as a literal step backwards for Peter. That, indeed, part of growing up is accepting the good and the bad things that happen. You take your licks, and muddle through the events as best you can. The reason why “Brand New Archie” loses impact is that the Archie story itself is having it’s cake and eating it too as it’s not a ‘real’ story. Thus, what’s the difference in the Spiderman story and they Archie one? By making a story that isn’t ‘real’, Archie totally gets out of having to deal with the consequences of said story. Neither have truly grown up, hmmmmm?

Gold! I love it! Great punch-line! Very visual š I think some people are overthinking it..

Definitely agree, Mike.
Also, Alex…I’ll have to agree to disagree with you on this. I don’t understand: “The reason why āBrand New Archieā loses impact is that the Archie story itself is having itās cake and eating it too as itās not a ārealā story'”, specifically. Can’t seem to wrap my mind around how that would impact the punchline with a hamburger headed jughead.

The hambuger head is the gag, not the point of the comic. On that regard, I totally agree with you. It’s damn funny.

The barb of wit is sort of dulled by the fact that this IS pretty much what happens to Archie…. they’ve been stuck at sixteen for what, fifty years now? Perhaps the point is that Quesada is trying to turn Spider-Man into another crappy perpetual-teen Archie style comic?

You know Jughead will eventually eat his own head…

Yeah, and then he’ll want another burger…
