I gave up on Smallville sometime at the end of season 2. My whole love of the show was around Lex trying to be good with his nutcase dad trying to bring him down to his level. I never cared too much for the others, either character wise or acting wise.
could someone put the feeling in words? because part of me understands whats going on with josh. the show sucked, as always, but part of me expected something from the finale, i don’t know, resolution? a proper superman appearance? i don’t know…
It was never about Smallville being GOOD, it was about Smallville being THERE. Because if it was THERE, then, in some way, Superman is on TV and being represented in the media consciousness. Even if it was crap, it was a new generation knowing the Superman mythos…sort of. In a bad way. BUT IT WAS STILL A WAY.
I don’t know if Superman being THERE is really worth the beating he takes during this show. If we want people exposed to the superman mythos, then do we want the seeing this faux reality where there’s kryptonite under every pillow and more people randomly grow superpowers than a bad day with the X-Men? I think that the show confused people more on the basis of superman, or worse, turned them OFF because Clark has always come off to me [And I watched all the way through to Season 9 before I gave up going episode to episode] as whiny and annoying; as though he felt that his powers were never good enough to save people when in reality it was because he didn’t try. That sort of changed when be became ‘the blur’ but that didn’t last long and was rather confusing considering that it brings up these ideas that Superman was already active and avoiding the media and raises questions about why he’d bother getting the new suit, which in turn makes the classic superman suit a plothole. This show should probably have wrapped up by Season 4 and taken more of the important story elements of later seasons, if there were any, and replaced filler episodes with them. After so much smallville, I personally felt that if I saw one more convenient bouts of amnesia or personality change/swap, I might have to do something drastic to excavate the memories from my skull.

Also, I have to take issue with the statement that anything before Crisis on Infinite Earths no longer matters. It may not be included in current continuity, but the Silver Age provided some of the most enjoyable Superman stories written, and to ignore their influence does them a disservice.

Linda pretty much summed it up. It’s a very obsessive, geeky, cynical way to regard the show, but hey, that’s me to a T. And I never had to feel guilty alone, as years of message board conversations (no one I know in real life would watch it) showed me that there were maaaaaaany fans whose hatred and love of the show were practically sitting on their shoulder arguing it out like the little angel and devil in the cartoons.

I finally gave up on watching smallville around season 7. Should I go back and watch the rest?

I came back to watch the last episode after watching it on/off since season 7.
It wasn’t really worth it.

Judging by Josh, I haven’t missed too much.

Unless you’ve sat through most of Smallville, you probably can’t understand exactly what Josh is going through right now.

I think I get it. But it was almost to subtle for me to get ^^

You mean the Silver Age?

I also gave up on Smallville around season 2, but I kept watching right up to season 9 🙂
I’ve really been jonesing for some Smallville action, but I’ve got no TV, download or streaming video capability at the mo…
I know it’s going to suck, it’s Smallville, but I’ve got to see it, for he sake of completeness…

“You mean the Silver Age?”
*cough* Crisis on Infinite Earths >>
You make a good point sir, but that hasn’t been relevant since 1985, so I must respectfully disagree

Panel 3 is the definitive “end of Smallville” face. Apply to most episodes, and especially to the finale.

I think this may be the best art I’ve seen on this comic so far.

funniest thing ever! Right on the money…***Spoiler*** no suit. You don’t see it. There was no reason for the show….no big fight at the end….

This is an incredibly accurate summation of my viewing experience.
