Josh is only fooling himself by thinking any Marvel event has a 50/50 chance of not blowing.

I was in the shop and just flipped through AvX#0 (I think that’s what it was), landed on a full page image of the Vision crying, nodded in reassurance, and put it back on the rack. It’s nice when you can find concrete reasons to ignore an event book that quickly.

I don’t mind a big crossovers (Secret Wars, Infinity Gauntlet, Age of Apocalypse), but hate the notion that they’re a required annual event.
On the other hand, Jason Aaron has promised that Kid Gladiator will make an appearance, and there’s no way I’m missing that.

I think you misunderstand. It’s The Vision specifically that I don’t care to see crying, because Crying Vision is such a ridiculous and overused gimmick. I had a similar reaction flipping through the Avengers issue a while back where Vision was reintroduced. It’s not that I have anything against the character in general, but if Bendis is just going to throw away any pretense of emotional weight by having Tony all “Hey, I’ve been rebuilding this guy off-panel for the last few years, now he’s alive again!” then how am I supposed to give a crap? And now right away he’s back to giving his synthetic tear ducts a work out because Wanda something something and they’ve decided to make that a central piece of the comic and presumably the entire event so screw it. If they’re bringing Vision back just to use him like that, then I’ll wait for the next one.

He’s definitely better off not opening the comic. The writing in AvX #0 was so ‘by the numbers’ and the art so bland and insipid that it gave me plenty of reason not to bother with AvX at all. If, by some miracle, it turns out to be good then there’s always the trades I suppose but I suspect the 5 rotating writers approach will produce remarkably poor results.
I envy anyone who didn’t read Civil War (or any other major Marvel ‘events’) and therefore thinks that AvX is fresh and original.
Marvel: please don’t do any events next year.
